Election pledges from State candidates to JRA Members and Friends. JRA does not endorse any particular party or candidate in accordance with our non-alliance policy. We are only providing information provided in response to our member's concerns and questions. JRA Executive hopes this additional information is helpful in making a very personal decision. Unfortunately time restraints upon some of the Mt Ommaney Candidates led to the delay in presenting this information. The candidates for the four leading parties are now aware of the main Local Issues directly affecting Jamboree Heights. ·        Sumner Bridge duplication. ·        Centenary/Western Motorways upgrade. ·        Motorway Sound barrier inadequacies. ·        Policing issues – more staffing – upgrade in technology to assist officers with shift reports – more local speed surveillance. ·        Lack of CBD bus route via Legacy Tunnel. We are pleased to report that all are sympathetic to these concerns. However, and understandably, due to this election being their first attempt into politics it was impossible to get firm commitments and a time-table on when they can be addresses. Our Labor candidate Mr Ben Marczyk was in a position to give a more definite timetable on the bridge duplication and sound barrier noise monitoring, as he has inherited the schedule set in place by our retiring State Member, Mrs Attwood. Both Ben and our Lib/Nat candidate, Tarnya White, have been fortunate with the assistance of their bigger election campaign budgets to supply our letter boxes with many of their State Wide pledges. It was interesting and pleasing to see a pledge from Tarnya to investigate safer signalised school crossings in at least one location of the electorate. Ben also pledged an investigation into prioritizing Darra bound traffic along Sumner Road at the western roundabout at the existing single lane Sumner Bridge during the three year lead up time for the bridge duplication construction. We have included the pledges presented by the lesser campaign funded, Qld. Greens (Jenny Mulkearns) and the Katter Australia Party representatives. Many voters may have not have received their pledges and may assist in allocating preferences. (view these below). It is with regret that none of the Parties, or their candidates, has given their support to addressing the absence of a bus corridor to the CBD via the Legacy Tunnel project. JRA is most thankful for all candidates taking time from their busy schedules to visit and address our agenda wish list and in providing quality candidates capable of representing the Mt Ommaney Electoral District. Happy voting and you can rest assure that JRA will endeavour to keep presenting Jamboree Heights’ ongoing issues to the successful candidate during their tenure. Jenny Mulkearns, Qld Greens candidate for Mount Ommaney: Response to issues raised by Jamboree Residents Association (JRA) Sumner Road: It is identified that the two roundabouts at Sumner Road are causing congestion and traffic blockages during peak times both weekdays and weekends. I note that this is currently being managed by the Department of Main Roads and is in phase 3, consultation on options with residents. As local member I would work with the relevant agency to look at the priority of this work and advise of issues being raised by local residents. Sound Barrier Centenary Motorway: I understand that there are concerns from residents in Jamboree Heights with increased traffic noise since the removal of the sound barriers behind Mitre 10. As local member it would be important for me to work with the relevant agency to ensure that any noise testing in this area in undertaken during peak periods when traffic noise is at a peak. I would also work with the agency to review the current sound barriers along the Centenary Motorway to ensure that all efforts are undertaken to reduce traffic noise for residents close to the freeway traffic. Additional inbound lane on Western Freeway: One additional lane on the freeway could be considered if it were to be used as a bus/T2 or T3 lane. This would encourage share rides and improve times for buses heading to the city during peak hours. Legacy Tunnel traffic: The increase of traffic on the freeway as a result of the work being undertaken in the Legacy Tunnel and the increase, once open, would need to be reviewed.  A third lane from the entrance to the tunnel to the Sumner entry may assist with this. Cost of public transport: It is acknowledge that since the cost of public transport increased by 15% there was a large percentage drop off of commuters. The Queensland Greens support daily and weekly caps on fares to ensure users are not charged more than the equivalent daily or weekly ticket when using the Go-Card system. This is similar to that offered in London by the Oyster system where fares are capped at 10% less than a paper ticket when using the Oyster Card. For seniors and pension card holders the Greens support free off peak and weekend travel for concession card holders. By getting more travellers on to public transport we can reduce congestion on our roads including the major freeways. I support the Queensland Greens policy to extend and increase the services in South East Queensland’s urban rail network and the creation of new public transport routes linking major suburban destinations outside the CBD. The restructuring of vehicle registration to encourage fuel efficiency and discourage air pollutions will assist in building a clean future for Queensland. Rail Corridor: With the continued development south of the Mount Ommaney electorate and increased traffic from this area through the area it is essential we look at extending the rail corridor along with linking suburbs along this route. Extend and increase the level of service in South East Queensland's urban rail network. The Greens will ensure that rail corridors are reserved in new development areas and that public transport infrastructure built in these corridors as development occurs. There are plans to build a light rail network in Brisbane as an upgrade to the bus way network that will complement the heavy passenger rail network. Increasing the synergy between rail and bus operations, particularly those bus services which stop at or near train stations will improve access, this includes the introduction of feeder bus routes for train lines rather than bus services which run parallel to the train line. Night buses from railway stations: The safety offered by the inclusion of small shuttle buses at key stations after hours would ensure that commuters who are coming home late are able to arrive home safely without having to wait to for taxis at peak night times. This could be investigated as an option to increase public safety and to encourage use of public transport. Future development: The western suburbs and the Mount Ommaney electorate are known for their open parklands and green spaces. As this area continues to develop the housing costs continue to rise. Increase in population in the electorate needs to be within the current housing availability. Uncontrolled increase in housing and development cannot be supported without consideration of the services and potential loss of green space. Development in areas that have been impacted by flooding have the potential to increase flooding in the future. Consideration should be made to protecting our natural flood mitigation areas in the electorate. Carers: Caring includes all aspects of care giving, including domestic chores and these should be recognised as such. It is understood that there are major issues with current supports and payments for carers of people with a disability. The Greens want to support carers as the work they do is integral to keeping people happy and healthy in a community setting. We want to simplify the bureaucratic requirements of applying for benefits and transfer those cost savings towards the provision of direct support services. Environmentally friendly lighting and signage: The plan identified by the Jamboree Residents association to utilise environmentally friendly lighting design on our roads is well worth looking into. Anything that uses the power of the sun as an alternative will always be seen as priority by the Greens. The use of solar lighting and signage on the Centenary should be investigated.
Katter Australia Party Pledges for the Mt Ommaney Electorate. Should I be elected I will be seeking to have built a railway station and car park on Wolston Rd at the bottom of Spine St Sumner Industrial area. This is necessary to relieve traffic flow to Darra and Oxley stations as well as parking issues and provides Sumner park industrial estate as well as our suburbs more convenient access to rail. I would also seek to remove the prison populations from the Moreton correctional centre area and convert the facilities to a hospital with a focus on Mental health, Brain cancer, Aging diseases, Drug and alcohol affects on the brain. [It would still have an emergency dept and treat normal emergency illnesses] I will be seeking the removal of bat population habitats and feral pests. I do not describe myself as a greenie, but I am aware of the need to protect the environment hand in hand with development. Once a species is gone it is gone forever. In my personal opinion development must have a social responsibility not to allow weeds, pests and eyesores to develop in the urban area. I am sensitive to the needs of Pooh Corner and would be seeking input from the protectors of that area on how best to proceed. The value of land, the pressure of development and the need to preserve will always be with us. We can only hope that we all find the best forward to satisfy all those needs.
Douglas Newson Katters Australian Party Candidate.

SAFETY ALERT Attempted Break and Enters and disturbances. Â Â
Once again there is a spate of incidents involving attempted break and entries into Jamboree Height’s residences and street disturbances this time in the lower Andaman Street region. Police have been called on three separate occasions that the JRA Executive have been informed of since the 26 February, 2012.  Once again two of these attempts have been made in the early hours while residents were at home, but these attempts don’t appear to be of the same magnitude of previous events in early to middle 2011.  There has also been an incident at night involving a number of youth down around the bikeway ramp. This is near the Andaman Street entry to Mt Ommaney Shopping Centre, and it is well known that this bikeway access, which enables access through Jamboree Heights and adjoining suburbs. This area is often frequented by mischief-makers as it is isolated and not on regular Police patrol routes.  Things You Can Do:  ·       Please pass this message onto your neighbours, friends and local businesses, increase security procedures and don’t hesitate to call the Police with any suspicion or evidence of trouble on 131-444 (PoliceLink).  ·        If an incident is in progress, keep to a safe distance or get to a neighbour and call 000.  ·        Listen to your instincts - to ignore a suspicion could lead to you or a neighbour being harmed.  ·        Check your home and yard security (e.g. ensure lights and sensors are working, windows & doors can be locked effectively).  ·        With holidays coming up, remember your normal precautions – put hold on mail and deliveries (unless a neighbour can take these on). Let people know of your absence and ask them to keep an eye on things.   Please contact JRA’s Web Administrator, Andrea, via

Police Commissioner Meets with Residents.       Mrs Attwood, the State Member for Mt Ommaney, invited Jamboree residents to meet with the Police Commissioner, Mr Bob Atkinson Tuesday evening, 18 October, 2011. Her initial invite was as follows: Greetings! You are warmly invited to attend a community meeting with the Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson APM to be held at 6.30pm on Tuesday 18 October 2011 at the Jindalee Bowls Club, corner of Sinnamon and Yallambee Roads Jindalee. I have asked Commissioner Atkinson to address local groups in my electorate about a number of issues including: You are most welcome to come along to meet Commissioner Atkinson and talk to him first hand about any concerns you have in relation to policing in our community. Please RSVP to my office by Friday 14 October on 32795137 or email:

JRA had registered three issues with Mrs Attwood for Commissioner Atkinson. In 2010, JRA met with the Police Minister, the Commissioner and his police team at the Community Cabinet meeting at Forrest Lake to discuss speeding issues in 40 km/h zone of Andaman Street Jamboree Heights. Shortly afterwards the Police Minister announced in the Courier Mail that there would be a stronger police presence in suburban streets to enforce speeding in 40, 50 and 60 km/h zones.
Question: This enforcement doesn’t appear to be happening? (see update below)
During 2010, the residences of Jamboree Heights were subjected to numerous break and entries and the incidence of some resident/s firing marbles by ging-shot. Mt Ommaney police, partly with your intervention, were very active in their attempt to solve the problem but were hampered in their investigations by the archaic methods of central reporting of night shift reports from officers in patrol cars from other police stations within the district.
Question: Has the Police Dept. adopted any new computer programs since August 2010 that can correlate Night Police Shift Reports from officers from various Police Stations within a Police District into various categories by crime offence and suburban frequency and breakdown?
Question: Can the Commissioner give a report on the prosecution sentencing of the person/s who was detained for committing these offences?
Over recent years there appears to be a lack of crime reporting in our local newspapers.
Question: Is there a reason for this?
UPDATE Mt Ommaney Police officers were in Andaman Street on Saturday, 15 October, 2011 from 2pm monitoring for speeding drivers. Business was brisk, with a few motorists receiving either cautions or offence notices. The police officers reported that they had conducted similar visits recently and more were on the agenda. One local resident, who had placed a complaint with Mt Ommaney Police Station re speeding occurrences in Andaman Street, reported a marked reduction in speeding while the police were in action. Â
Several visits have been conducted by officers concerning noise and parking infringements in the last 10 days (most notably in the areas of Pennant, Bollard, Spinnaker & Andaman Streets). MEETING REPORT TO BE POSTED IN THE NEAR FUTURE. |

JRA DISCUSSION AGENDA TOPICS WITH CR BOURKE Date:Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Tuesday, 20 September, 2011 @ 9.30am Present:Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Cr. Bourke and JRA President W Williams SIROCCO INTERSECTION SIGNALIZED TRAFFIC LIGHTS?
$15,000 budgeted for traffic study – all existing lights along Dandenong road to be put on same smart system and coordinated.JRA expressed concerns that if a full set of lights were installed at the Sirocco/Central/Dandenong intersection that they might encourage the use on Galleon Street as an alternative route to Mt Ommaney Shopping Centre. JRA also expressed concerns that if entry and exit intervals at the Kentucky lights were reduced, it could encourage more motorists to use the Andaman Street access point.
NO FIRM COMMITTMENT THAT LIGHTS WILL BE INSTALLED OR FUNDS AVAILABLE– STILL TAKING SUBMISSIONS. WE AWAIT THE FINDINGS OF THE TRAFIC SURVEY. FOOTPATH CONSTRUCTION IN GALLEON ST.
NOW STARTED REQUEST FOR KERB CUTS IN ANDAMAN STREET GUTTER TO RELEASE SEEPAGE FROM MOTORWAY?

The approved Sheoak Park playground improvements in Middle Park got the go ahead for funding over Jamboree Park because at present there was only 1 set of swings in this park. JRA will continue to put forward the needs of Jamboree Park (Guide Street, Jamboree Heights). Cr Bourke has addressed the issue with the owner and has reported the matter to relevant council authority for remedial action. THE ROAD RESURFACING WORK IS NOW COMPLETED  COMMUNITY CENTRE PROGRESS – DESIGN AND BOOKING PROCESS?
Council has a three year lease with option of 3 x 3 thereafter. Cr Bourke was unclear as to whether both parties could exercise ‘the Option’. The opening time will evolve as construction continues.

Energy Conservation Community Program JRA Executive is corresponding with Energex on ways that we can assist members with reducing their electricity bills.JRA’S last promotion on the installation of home solar electricity generation, has delivered remarkable cost savings for those that proceeded with the installation. A few residents have reported that they paid nothing for their last (winter) electricity bill and one resident received a $50 rebate. NB: JRA encourages residents to take into account all costs (e.g. installation, maintenance, upgrades, etc) when making their decisions re any alternative energy. It is important to examine all aspects when calculating potential savings. Ultimately, you are responsible for your own decisions and results. Even though the installation subsidy has been reduced, it is not too late to apply. Over supply of home generated electricity is causing some problems with transformers in some locations throughout Qld. resulting in their applications to-connect to be denied. If you are still considering, then don’t dally.Jamboree Heights is one of the selected suburbs in Brisbane in which Energex is launching their new energy saving programme. Your executive, working in conjunction with the Westside Church, has arranged with Energex to conduct an information evening on Monday, 28 November, 2011. Once the final arrangements are made, you will be notified. JRA correspondence with Energex:From November 2011, residents of Jamboree Heights and JRA will be able to join the energy conservation communities (ECC) program. The ECC program is a sustainability initiative aimed at reducing peak demand by encouraging communities to make simple changes to the way electricity is used. The program is FREE to join and each resident can receive incentives valued up to $600 towards electricity saving equipment and installation. In addition, for every resident who is a member of JRA who participates, a $50 donation is added to the Powerpact Community Partnership Fund. Powerpact support local community groups and schools by providing financial assistance towards energy conservation, sustainability and demand management projects. We would welcome the opportunity to attend one of your meetings to discuss how JRA could benefit from the program and also a general discussion on the energy industry in South East Queensland. Further to our conversation today, we are willing to provide assistance in marketing materials for the day (letter box drop and ad in local newspaper). We would be looking to hold the presentation sometime in November. The more that join and reduce their electricity bill, the more $$$ that could be made available to assist JRA in continuing with the enhancement work of our suburb. |
